That time of the year is approaching again: back to school and with school comes the risk of the return of head lice.
If you know that your child's school has a problem with lice, you might as well start taking precautions right away.
Lcd Car Headrest
Teach your children that they should not exchange headwear, combs, hairpins and ribbons or any other personal items with other children. Lice can cling onto these items and transfer directly onto the next child.
If your child has long hair, braid it and if your son is not so keen on wearing a braid, you might want to try to convince him to have his hair cut shorter.
Tell your children to avoid head-to-head contact with other children. If heads get close enough, the lice will scurry from one to the other.
If you know that there have been cases of head lice in your child's school, do a nit check (those are the head lice's eggs) every three to four days. Don't forget to check the other members of the household and if you find nits, keep you child home until you have solved the problem. Some schools are just going to send the child home anyways.
To prevent a head lice infestation of taking over your household, you're going to have to do your spring-cleaning early: wash all bedding, towels, head wear and clothing items that the infested child has worn recently. If your washing machine doesn't have the option for very hot water, you might have to add boiling water to the cycle. Then dry all items in the dryer for a minimum of 20 minutes, again on a hot cycle. Items that cannot be washed should be taken right away to the dry cleaner. Don't forget to explain the situation to you dry cleaner. Other items that can't be washed, like stuffed animals and dolls, should be sealed in airtight bags for about 2 weeks. By this time, all lice and nits should be dead.
If you don't want to go through all of these cleaning steps every time there's a "lice alarm", you can just tumble most of the items on a high heat cycle in your dryer (without prior washing). The heat and the tumbling get rid of the lice and nits.
Vacuum all carpets, area rugs, couches, mattresses and curtains at least once. After that, just vacuum the headrest areas of the furniture and mattress while you doing your regular cleaning. It's not necessary to steam clean anything. Don't forget to vacuum the car, especially the headrest. Discard the vacuum bag right away.
It is not recommended to spray the house with insecticides, as these can be more harmful than the lice themselves.
Re-infestation can occur no matter how careful you are and how many precautions you take. Just make sure that your child's teacher calls when there has been a case of head lice at school, so you can check your child on a daily basis to make sure it doesn't bring any into your home. Again, don't forget to check the other members of the family.
All combs, brushes, hairpins and others should be soaked in very hot water for at least 15 minutes and then thoroughly brushed. This should be done on a regular basis.
Most sites on head lice will recommend that you tell your child to stay away from people infested with lice. This is of course the best precaution, but it can be painful and embarrassing if you are the infested child. Remind your child to be sensitive. It is, after all, not such a big deal having head lice. Tell your child it's no different than avoiding a child that has the flu and get it into their heads that having head lice has absolutely nothing to do with hygiene or the financial background of the family. Some doctors even claim that head lice prefer clean scalps. With smaller children, you can still make it interesting, an adventure, to get rid of the lice, but older children will have a harder time. So make sure to talk about it repeatedly and remind him how they would feel if they were on the receiving end of the teasing and rejection.
